Who am I?
WHO: Welcome! With 21 years of experience practicing mindful movement and yoga, let me guide your practice, whether you are seeking one-on-one or a children's group experience. I have CPR/AED training and certifications as well as liability insurance.
WHERE: Currently, I am living with the love of my life in Montopolis which is in East Austin on one acre where we keep our converted Bus Tiny Home (aka “Skoolie”) (follow us @TATANKABUS on instagram to see where we were across the country the past few years). I am teaching my passion at Austin’s Casa de Luz 3rd Eye Meditation Lounge. I’m available to teach in-person private sessions and for workshops in the greater Austin area upon request.
WHY: A refreshing spirit that is able to connect with anyone, anywhere, anytime. Outgoing, openhearted, and open-minded — a vulnerability that is able to put others at ease and in turn creates emotionally safe spaces that benefit the community. An impassioned idealist who is cautiously optimistic. Driven by a playful and curious nature, able to communicate beyond the obvious or seen. Constantly seeks out changing environments and learning from people from all walks of life — ready for every new adventure that awaits. Nourished by sensory experience and has capacity to feel rejuvenated and enlivened by novel experiences.
WHAT: In an adult class, you can expect powerful music that speaks to your core as we build fire, warm up the breath and body, focus on alignment, learn fun inversions – and even get you into that arm balance you've always admired! In children’s classes, I instruct students in mindful movement, a brief history on the origin of yoga from its Indian roots to give context and cultural appreciation, interactive games, books, song and dance that include movements with modifications for all children, including those with autism and special needs.
HOW: As a RYT-200, I have received my RCYT-95 hour (Children’s Teacher) certification from the empowering program Yogiños: Yoga for Youth based in Houston-TX and am in the Leadership Program to guide new Children Teachers on their journeys. I have been practicing since 2003 as a healing practice after losing my father and since losing my mother in 2015 both to sudden heart failure. Mindfulness and yoga have guided me to live and practice a healthy lifestyle that can yield longevity and serve as a coping mechanism for grief. Now, with the Global Pandemic and COVID-10 omnipresent, coping with grief has become a new normal and I truly want to serve you and guide your healing process if you are open to it.
My Background
As a Washington, D.C. native, after receiving my bachelor’s from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and my master’s from University of Texas-Austin’s LBJ School of Public Affairs, I began studying Ayurveda independently with the best in the field. While working in the federal government for nearly a decade and on the democratic nominee's presidential election in 2015-16, I took yoga and meditation classes while I also offered fellow employees and volunteers yoga and meditation. That’s when I realized that I wanted to help busy professionals and our youth learn to calm their bodies and minds. In 2016, I relocated to NYC to receive my Vinyasa 200-hour teaching certification from Sonic Yoga Studio in Hells Kitchen in Manhattan.
For seven years, I have taught Yoga and Mindful Movement to children and families. Beginning at Harlem Yoga Studio and with the NYC-based nonprofit Under Our Umbrella, I deepened my Ayurveda practice at the Udayagiri Retreat Center in Kerala, India where I meditated daily, taught Vinyasa, and learned a few foundational practices of the martial art Kalari. In 2018, I followed my heart and moved (back) to Texas where I taught children (preK-3rd grade) yoga at Houston’s Independent School District’s first Arabic Immersion Magnet School. In 2019 I completed my RCYT with Yogiños: Yoga for Youth and since then, I created my own LLC, Yoga by Farrah, with my certifications in teaching adults, children and adolescents and a combined 1000+ hours in teaching children (including neurodiverse children), to serve my community.
For two years, I taught in the Greater Houston area at Extraordinary Abilities for Children with Autism in Katy, TX, Children’s Yoga Classes at Westside Montessori School, The Post Oak School Summer Camp and After School Program, Yoga Pod, Yogaleena Studio & Boutique in River Oaks, and I was the Yoga Program Coordinator at O Athletik Health Club in the Heights.
Since 2021, Austin became my permanent home once again and I have subbed around town for private lessons as well as for Corporate Yoga via Be Well Fit and Serenity Fitness. Casa de Luz and the 3rd Eye Lounge have been my favorite place to retreat to for meditation, yoga, and a delicious meal--it's the best oasis in Austin and I am honored to be the 3rd Eye Lounge’s only Vinyasa teacher. Also, I love teaching children — and even teaching teachers how to teach their students yoga so please connect with me if interested!
I’m available to teach mindful movement to children and adults ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD and look forward to practicing with YOU!
SHANTI! PEACE!
